BUTTERBALLING

I call him Butterball—not to his face—it’s the way I see him, his five-foot frame, his wide-stance, his hooked thumbs in saggy trousers. How could I miss him? When he is seated—which isn’t often—he sits near the back door, the one maintenance refuses to bolt shut for fire-safety reasons. I tell my students, “Use the front door, the back door’s ‘For Emergencies Only’.”

With Butterball everything’s an emergency.

“I had to take a shit,” he says upon his return.

He did not have staff authorization to leave. I’m tired of his antics. I write him an “Out of Place” ticket. As I press ballpoint against the triplicate-form, he grabs the evidence: the absence slip, and rips it into pieces, and makes it snow.

“Give me your ID card,” I order.

Butterball refuses—his flat-footed feet are stubbornly anchored at the side of my desk.

I’m not into confrontations; but I’m also not into being “disrespected.”  I clear out my classroom. Soon Butterball and I are standing toe-to-toe in front of the deputy warden, school principal, and school officer. His final defiant act is to drop his ID card onto the floor when I request it—his way of showing everyone that he will now follow the CO’s direct order and hand me the ID card.

I add the following violations to the ticket:  “Disobeying a Direct Order” and “Destruction or Misuse of State Property.”

Of course none of it matters. He resides in the mental healthcare unit; He’ll claim he needs to be re-evaluated, that his medication is off. His actions are deliberate; he knows what he is doing. It's part of the game. I call it BUTTERBALLING.

LMAO butterballing! Wow that's like a giant defiant little teenage jerk. Some people never grow up.

The problem is that these "mental midget" giants don't even realize that they're in prison serving time; they think they can continue doing what doesn't work ... as if it's not them ... heck, it's everyone else who has problems.

I used to call it milking the system...guys who use their diagnosis as an excuse for everything. The "consumers" that came from prison acted like spoiled brats.

SO much of our time is wasted by posturing. I'm getting really tired of it these days.

"With Butterball everything’s an emergency" -- perfect zinger.

As with so many. Posturing, theatrics and, probably, also out of boredom.

It's a scam and he's not the only one doing it. Great writing. Enjoyed the read. MW

I love these excerpts, JR! Hey email me when you get a minute, will you. I lost your email address and have a friend who wants an article he wrote published in a professional journal re prison education.

Thanks everyone for the comments. I've been horrible at reciprocating; please forgive me as I try to get my life back in order.

Hey Rick, give me a day or two and I'll try to get back to you.

Again, thanks everyone ... it's not easy dealing with all the bullshit inside & outside the prison.

Yep these bastards are turning up in the hood now. I am never more than 4 feet from a shot gun just in case one comes across the fence and wants a piece of dog before they get an load of shot. Fuck these sons of bitches.

Great post, JR. And I have to second Charles Gramlich's comment.
